The LIMS Institute

The LIMS Institute seeks to bring together those who want to learn more about LIMS with those who are knowledgeable on the subject. Their charter is to discuss the uses, benefits and limitations of various LIMS currently in use, and the modifications and improvements which have been made to adapt these systems to specific laboratory needs.

The Institute is unique in that no other organization is solely devoted to this marketplace. A non-profit organization, its basic purpose is to establish and maintain an international forum through the organization and sponsorship of conferences and other educational programs for the communication and exchange of information, ideas and experiences on LIMS.

How does such an entity begin? "In 1985, Harmon Brown, Dave Nelson and Graham Martin approached me with the idea of starting a conference dedicated to LIMS," recalls Gerst Gibbon, LIMS Institute president. "After several meetings, I agreed to organize the initial conference in Pittsburgh."

The Society for Analytical Chemists (Pittsburgh, PA), a co-sponsor of the Pittsburgh Conference, provided a $1000 starter grant and the fledgling conference was on its way. "Harmon Brown served as program chairman and Mark Bott from my lab served as treasurer," Gibbon continues. "I mention these two of the many who served on the organizing committee because they shared the moments of despair with me as the papers very slowly arrived, and the registration dribbled in at a snail's pace. Both did arrive finally and a very successful meeting with 400 attendees was held from June 23-25, 1987."

The 1988 meeting was also held in Pittsburgh before the conference location started alternating between Europe and the US, a system which continues to this day. After the success of the second event, the LIMS Institute, a non-profit corporation, was formed to collect and manage the funds generated by the meetings and hold those funds for future conferences. Today, the Institute continues to strive for the dissemination of LIMS knowledge.
