According to a 1994 review in Laboratory Automation & Information magazine, the book is aimed at laboratory supervisors and managers who have a limited knowledge of computer programming as an introduction to the use of a relational database for the management of laboratory data.

Previous programming knowledge is not assumed, and the book contains step-by-step instructions to design a simple LIMS. For instance, the reader is taken through the creation of menus to operate the system, log-in screens, work sheets, manual results entry, verify and approve results, and tables for monitoring laboratory performance and security.

The book comes with a run time version of the LABIS (Laboratory Information System) "shareware" software described in it. The user is provided with a large amount of printed source code in the book but not all of the functions are available on the companion disk. The package utilizes Borland's Paradox 3.x, a relational database management system for MS-DOS, and requires about 3Mb of disk space to load.

According to the review, the book and the software provide a good representation of LIMS concepts that apply to the real world and are recommended to anyone interested in how to apply LIMS in their own laboratories. The book is not an academic treatise but focuses primarily on the practical aspects of LIMS. Analysts are encouraged to read the book and use the software as it provides a non-commercial insight into LIMS.
