Editor Kiyoshi Okuda works in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Osaka
City University Medical School in Japan. His book is comprised of the proceedings
of the IUPAC 3rd International Congress on Automation and New Technology
in the Clinical Laboratory held in Kobe, Japan from September 5-8, 1988.
55 papers are included.
In his preface, Okuda states that "much of the recent progress in medical
science and medical care can be attributed to developments in laboratory
medicine. Usually, an advance in methodology leads to developments in the
field of science. At this 3rd International Congress meeting, many researchers
from Japan and overseas gathered to speak about their research and exchange
opinions on automation in the clinical laboratory, including the theory
and practical applications of the latest technologies."
Topics include expert systems in clinical chemistry, principles and applications
of biosensors, critical care testing using unmanned robotic facilities,
rapid diagnosis of clinical infections using new technology, instrumentation
in primary care, recent development of nucleic acid probes in clinical microbiology,
the use of enhance chemiluminescence in immunoassay, new techniques in hematology,
and more.
The book is presented exactly as if it were a collection of papers and utilizes
the typefaces that each of the authors used, making reading the papers more
difficult than it should be. Papers are supported by graphics, photographs,
charts and references as appropriate.
