John Eaton is Professor and Associate Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering department at Stanford University, California. He leads a team of 10-15 researchers investigating particle-laden turbulent flows, three-dimensional turbulent flows, and convective heat transfer in complex flows. Laura Eaton is an independent software consultant working on the development of custom laboratory instrumentation systems and multimedia educational products. She holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management from the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University.

According to publisher-supplied information, LabTutor is a combined book and software system which provides an introduction to the principles and practice of laboratory data acquisition, experimental control, and data processing using any hardware/software system. LabTutor includes specific instruction and examples on how to use LabVIEW, a graphical programming language from National Instruments for developing automated instrumentation systems.

LabTutor allows new users to make effective use of laboratory computers with as little as ten hours of effort and to become accomplished practitioners with less than forty hours of effort. The printed version offers the convenience and readability of an ordinary book. The hypertext version includes sound and animation to clarify certain concepts and offers the advantage of rapid searching, making it useful as an on-line manual.

LabTutor can be used as a primary package for a course on laboratory computers, as a supplement in traditional laboratory courses, or as a self-guided tutorial for those learning to use laboratory computers on their own.

The price varies depending upon the text/software choice. A text only version is available for $29.95. Text and software versions, depending on Macintosh or Windows, range from $39.95 to $59.95. Site licenses incur an additional cost, depending on the number of users.
