Mary Hinton is a research chemist for and general partner of Applied Computer
Systems in Mobile, Alabama, USA, a LIMS consulting company and software
vendor. The author or co-author of several professional papers on information
management and analytical chemistry, she is a member of the Laboratory Automation
Standards Foundation and the American Society for Testing and Materials'
(ASTM) Committee on Computerized Systems. Her 360 page book discusses the
fundamentals of LIMS and the steps required to develop a customized system
or install an existing system, while emphasizing the importance of strict
quality assurance programs. The book establishes the criteria and goals
of LIMS, and
* analyzes in detail the validation aspects of quality assurance and provides
specific examples of LIMS validation methods -- written by noted system
testing and validation expert Dr. Sandy Weinberg;
* describes research, testing services, and manufacturing laboratories and
their functions, as well as the LIMS requirements of each;
* examines the quality assurance practices needed in the LIMS itself and
those of laboratory operations that must be supported in the LIMS;
* elucidates the different types of data used in various systems;
* shows how to design and implement a LIMS that conforms to the laboratory's
specific needs;
* presents a comparison table of LIMS vendors' lists of features; and
* bridges the gap between laboratory personnel and software developers.
The book consists of two parts, the Fundamentals of LIMS and LIMS Development
and Implementation, comprised of 18 sections. The bulk of the book focuses
on LIMS development issues with an emphasis on Quality Assurance. A guest
chapter was also contributed by Dr. Sandy Weinberg of Weinberg, Spelton
& Sax Inc. (Boothwyn, PA, USA) which highlights LIMS validation issues
that operate in conjunction with the quality assurance practices that Hinton
provides in great detail.
Several appendices include listings of LIMS articles and books, as well
as a comparison of 16 LIMS vendors and their products. Several charts detail
the various functions supported by the different vendors, including hardware
platforms, networks, operating systems and databases, as well as LIMS specific
functions and features from log-in methods to sample distribution to test
results to reports.
The book is touted as a hands-on guide for analytical chemists; quality
and reliability managers and directors; industrial, manufacturing, process,
design, cost, chemical, pharmaceutical, petroleum, and environmental engineers;
laboratory information systems and management information systems managers;
computer scientists; and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students
in these disciplines.
