A UK-based consultant since 1993, Bob McDowall specializes in process reengineering, IT strategy, LIMS, computer validation and method validation. He has over 20 years experience working as an analytical chemist and lab manager, including fifteen years within the pharmaceutical industry working for two multinational companies, Wellcome and SmithKline. As an analytical chemist, he was involved with the measurement of drugs in biological matrices, as well as sample preparation and validation of bioanalytical methods. As a lab manager, McDowall has used laboratory automation and information technology to improve the efficiency of his laboratories. In addition, McDowall has published more than 200 scientific papers, presentations and posters, and is a member of several international scientific symposia committees.

The book's 26 chapters are contributed by 26 authors, and edited by McDowall. Chapters cover everything from an introduction to LIMS to management considerations, decision criteria, benefits and justification of a system, implementation and support organization. The essentials of computing are also addressed, with information about computer hardware, user interfaces, databases, and chromatographic data acquisition. Other topics include implementation choices such as RFP and functional specifications, DIY (do-it-yourself) systems, and software houses. Validation is also a topic with such areas as LIMS and GLP, and documenting procedures in a regulated environment being addressed. There are also five chapters on commercial systems that are rather out of date now, but the bulk of the information dealing with management considerations remains current.

The book is marketed by John Wiley & Sons in the US under ISBN 0-470-20947-X, Halsted Press. It is marketed in the UK by Sigma Press, Wilmslow, Cheshire under the ISBN listed above.
