Author S.P. Maj is an Adjunct Professor at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, Denmark. He wrote the book not to transform the reader into a software or computer engineer, but to help scientists understand computers and use them more effectively. In the preface he states, "Books about computing are numerous, and they are typically written for a wide audience and tend to be product-specific. This book was written for scientists by a scientist. Fundamental computer engineering and automation concepts are described in simple technical language. Sufficient details of the operating principles of computer systems are provided to enable the scientist to read and evaluate technical literature critically and thereby to take an active part in selecting, implementing, using and maintaining laboratory computer systems. A laboratory computer system is the hardware, software and procedures needed to perform laboratory functions. Particular attention is given to LIMS and to the problems associated with the use, verification and validation of computers in regulated environments."

The introductory chapter covers how computer communications are performed, while subsequent chapters lead the reader through the intricacies of microprocessors, memory devices, operating systems, interfaces, networking, data processing and software engineering. It then relates how all these elements affect and impact the LIMS through discussions of GLP, GMP, and the laboratory system development cycle.

The book gives readers sufficient knowledge of computer systems and automation to enable them to critically read and evaluate technical literature and system specifications, thereby allowing the active participation in the selection, implementation, use and maintenance of computer systems in laboratories.
