Dorner EDV-Systeme was established in 1982 by diploma-mathematician Karl-Eugen Dorner. Together with the University of Freiburg, their first Laboratory Information System (LIS) was developed and introduced in 1985.

In July 2000, Dorner was acquired by Thiel Logistik AG (www.thiel-logistik.com), a full-service provider of comprehensive logistics systems.

Dorner products and solutions include: X/Lab, their Laboratory Information System; K/Lab for Cost Accounting in Laboratories; M/Lab for Microbiology in Laboratories; imed, a Results Server and integrated database; and, B/Lab, a Bloodbank System.

X/Lab was conceived and developed together with experts from the Clinical Chemistry department of the University Clinic in Freiburg, Germany. X/Lab is characterized by its practice-orientated approach as well as by a high degree of flexibility. This permits the use of X/Lab in laboratories with varying organization types. Individual program modules can be combined to optimally suit user needs and requirements.

X/Lab is based on UNIX and can be run on all current UNIX versions from different manufacturers. This interaction of operating system and X/Lab allows users to communicate with
other computer systems. Thus, X/Lab can be integrated with an organization's Hospital Information System (HIS).
