OriginLab publishes scientific graphing and data analysis software that provides a comprehensive solution for scientists and engineers who need to analyze, graph, and professionally present data. Their main product, Origin, was released in 1991 and is the company's basic scientific graphing and data analysis software solution. The latest version, OriginLab 8 has
features that speed lab research and increase operational efficiency. The centerpiece of version 8 is a multi-sheet workbook that has all the scientific complexity of graphing and analysis software, but with an easy-to-use interface that is similar to excel.

Scientists can use Origin’s flexible workbooks to embed images and graphs in cells to create an analysis series where they can see the evolution of cells or molecules on a slide or over a period of time, etc.  After this data is imported/entered into the workbook scientists can turn on a new feature called “Sparklines” which will create a header on the top of the worksheet with graphs at the top of each column that shows the general trend of the data within the column.  Thus, when scientists are analyzing or presenting their results they can show their research through integrated images, data, analysis and graphs that can be viewed in the same space.

Aside from making scientific software easier to use, OriginLab has also added a programming component that enables scientists to work with their IT departments to automate the research process so that Origin captures research data from whatever application researchers are using to input.  The software will then automatically graph, analyze, and put together a report on this data that can be delivered in a Microsoft report to the desktop at any interval the scientist desires.  This complete automation streamlines the research process as low level researchers no longer need to tinker with scientific software and can thus focus on their core competency of collecting data from the samples at hand.  The operational efficiency derived from streamlining data collection and analysis drives down costs and speeds research.

OriginLab has 100,000 licenses worldwide and some of their customers include: Eli Lily, GlaxoSmithKline, Biogen, Amgen, Pfizer, BASF, Dow Chemicals, NASA, national research laboratories and all of the ivy league universities.
