Coffey Analysis is a full-service consulting company for the biotechnology
and pharmaceutical industries. They specialize in automation software,
project consulting and management, and custom engineering for both pharmaceutical
discovery and production.
In March 2003, they introduced Automation Explorer,
a software solution that provides the backbone for a custom discovery automation
system that assists biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies to comply with
the FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 requirements for electronic records.
Automation Explorer is
discovery-stage automation software that tracks chemical entities through
a company's proprietary research processes. Those aspects of laboratory
automation that are common to almost every project are a standard part of
the Automation Explorer, including:
* tracking scientists from multiple companies or intra-company research groups
* loading descriptions of chemical entities from spreadsheets or other databases
* tracking chemical entities, including both synthesis and purification products
* display of chemical structures
* tracking multiple storage locations
* tracking the custody of vials and microplates
* managing projects and protocols
* barcode printing and reading
* biometric electronic signatures
Using the basic Automation Explorer as a starting point, Coffey Analysis works
with the copmany's scientists to design a system that will automate lab processes,
including instruments and protocols. The company believes that a proteomics
project is very different than a combinatorial chemistry project, and a "one
size fits all" approach just won't work, thus the system design needs
to take those differences into account. At the completion
of the project, the customer has the option of a source code license.
