Beckman Coulter, Inc. and InnaPhase Corporation have announced they have signed an agreement for InnaPhase to acquire the domestic assets of Beckman Coulter's Laboratory Automation Operation (LAO). Subject to standard closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close in June 2003. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Additionally, both parties have entered into negotiations for InnaPhase to acquire the foreign assets of LAO. Beckman Coulter's Laboratory Automation Operation designs, sells and services laboratory information management systems (LIMS) primarily for pharmaceutical quality control environments. LAO's product portfolio is a complement to InnaPhase's existing suite of LIMS solutions. Beckman made the announcement to their customers during their European User Meeting in Madrid, Spain on May 12, 2003.

The Laboratory Automation Operations of Beckman Coulter, Inc. provides client/server Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and Chromatography Data Systems (CDS) for scientific laboratories around the world. Beckman Coulter was a pioneer in the laboratory automation industry in 1979, introducing one of the first commercial LIMS. Beckman Coulter systems are installed at over 1,500 laboratories, serving industries that must meet high-quality standards and stringent regulatory requirements.

Beckman Coulter's LIMS and data management products include LabManager C/S LIMS, LabManager iLIMS, QuickStart LIMS and the Pinnacle Chromatography Data System

LabManager iLIMS
LabManager iLIMS is a newly engineered LIMS with a web browser user interface based on the Microsoft Outlook style. As a native Oracle8 application, LabManager iLIMS provides comprehensive sample, test, and data management on a Windows NT or HP9000 server. The system offers a complete Intel-based solution, fully scalable from the desktop to the enterprise.

Core LabManager iLIMS functionality includes multiple sample login scenarios, multiple data entry modes, test and sample review and release, and user-defined worksheets. User-definable forms and database architecture are a unique part of the solution, along with the custom functionality of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications. User-defined reports from the Crystal Reports tool add another important component to the LabManager iLIMS solution.

LabManager iLIMS is coupled with a choice of optional modules, an integrated instrument data acquisition system, extensive documentation, and a full offering of support solutions.

Pinnacle CDS
The Pinnacle Chromatography Data System is a client/server chromatography data system (CDS). This intuitive system -- ideal for medium- to large-scale laboratories -- meets the most demanding requirements for security, reliable enterprise-wide operation and fast handling of complex data. Pinnacle is scaleable up to an entire enterprise-wide system. A powerful Oracle relational database, combined with a user interface modeled after Microsoft Outlook, makes it easy for users to organize, sort, and report results in formats most relevant to their work environments. Pinnacle adapts to changing laboratory requirements, acquiring data from as few as one to a virtually unlimited number of analog instruments. Its standard Windows NT operating system and distributed architecture minimize the costs of system upgrades. Pinnacle's integrated security features give the user complete control of data and instrument access and prevent unauthorized changes to data. The latest version of Pinnacle CDS, version 1.2, includes features which help pharmaceutical companies meet the requirements of the FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 electronic signatures and records rule. Version 1.2 can maintain an audit trail for every document, recording time, full user name, certified electronic signature, and old/new values for each change.
