CARDIAC (Computer Aided Research and Development Instrumentation And Control) was founded by Morten Andresen as a spin-off of the research and cooperation in the field of laboratory automation between The Norwegian Institute of Technology and its large research organization SINTEF. During its first years of operation, Cardiac was active in instrumentation and data acquisition for research, information processing for advanced control, and dynamic modeling and simulation. The company performs programming tasks on the most commonly used PC platforms (Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows-NT), Macintosh, Power PC HP-UX, and SUN. The programming environment LabVIEW or LabWINDOWS are used.

Their LIMS product is IMATIS, which is both a stand-alone LIMS and a laboratory automation system. IMATIS LIMS has been designed for the optimization of laboratory workflow, simplification and automation of routines and the protection and security of data. The simplification of routines is achieved through automation of input, output, and post-processing in combination with analyses of samples. This involves a seamless integration of instrumentation and automation in reporting and analysis of data. In working with laboratory information it is important that the system does not set limits for the user but that the system is flexible and can adapt to the varying and growing work-cycles of a laboratory.

In 2002, the company introduced a LabVIEW-based LIMS version of their IMATIS LIMS. LabVIEW is a product of National Instruments. CARDIAC claims that this is the first commertcial LabVIEW-based LIMS on the market. IMATIS LIMS 3.1 is a web-based solution that interfaces to all National Instruments hardware, including IMAQ frame grabber and FieldPoint distributed I/O modules; provides tools for direct integration of serial and file transfer instruments directly to the LIMS; integrates with hald-held equipment, and supports vectors, binary result, picture, animations and sound as lab results.
