Thermo is a worldwide leader in laboratory software and related services, providing enterprise-wide, multi-laboratory solutions that have become the corporate standard at leading organizations. Their LIMS are facilitating laboratory data in the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, petrochemical and chemical plants, food and beverage manufacturers, and other major industries. To support their global installations, Thermo provides implementation, validation, training, maintenance and support from the industry’s largest worldwide informatics services network.

Thermo Electron Corporation offers integrated and comprehensive technological solutions for the laboratory, ranging from sample preparation and analysis, through to data interpretation and knowledge management. Thermo’s informatics products, including industry leading LIMS, play a key role in this through the secure capture, processing, reporting and archival of lab data, while providing new levels of integration with lab instrumentation, the process plant and the wider enterprise.

Darwin is their latest commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software solution designed specifically to support the complex testing, workflow and regulatory requirements of pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing quality control. Regulatory compliance. Complex testing. Batch-centric, non-continuous manufacturing processes. These challenges unique to the pharmaceutical industry have required drug companies to undergo lengthy, costly customization projects for the generic laboratory information management systems (LIMS) that are critical to the management and security of their data. And for the approximately 15 years it takes to bring a drug from discovery to market, data is the only asset a pharmaceutical company has.

With an installed base of over 1,100 systems supporting approximately 45,000 daily users in 43 countries around the world, Thermo’s SampleManager is one of the most established LIMS available. SampleManager is an enterprise LIMS designed to support laboratory operations and integrate those operations into the corporate enterprise. SampleManager has standard integration solutions to corporate software solutions such SAP R/3 Enterprise Resource Planning system and AspenTech’s InfoPlus.21 process information management system and also integrates with desktop applications and all leading laboratory instrumentation. Industries served by SampleManager include manufacturing, chemicals and process, food and beverage, water, and environmental.

Watson LIMS is a proven commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution specifically designed for bioanalytical testing. With minimal configuration required, implementation, validation and upgrades are much faster than with a generic LIMS, and companies can benefit from immediate efficiency gains. Watson includes key functionality specific to the DMPK laboratory, including flexible protocol-based study design, assay/method standardization and management, integrated sample management, and a configurable reassay decision tree. Watson includes more than 65 built-in interfaces to LC/MS, HPLC, plate readers, counters and ICP-MS instruments. It also supports a wide range of pharmacokinetics/toxicokinetics calculations. In addition, Watson’s simple, point and click graphical interface ensures users can get up to speed quickly and begin using the LIMS with minimal training.

Nautilus LIMS is focused on improving laboratory productivity and reducing the cost of ownership of LIMS to customers. With radically reduced implementation times and patented ‘Workflow’ technology minimizing the need for customization, Nautilus offers the scientists and researchers new levels of user empowerment, sample traceability and instrument integration. It features powerful and flexible plate handling functionality and has been designed with the integration of analytical instruments as a principle component of the LIMS architecture. Researchers are able to import and export data and analysis files easily using standard Nautilus functions, with no third party products or services required. Nautilus’ advanced Workflow functionality is used to automate decisions and actions throughout a sample’s lifecycle and enable the user to graphically map the actual laboratory workflow and sample life cycle onto the LIMS database, without software coding or the necessity for IS specialists.

Galileo LIMS has been specifically developed to optimize throughput for HTS ADME laboratories, overcoming the tradeoff between improving compound screening and optimizing throughput. As a commercial-off-the-shelf software solution, Galileo was designed for rapid implementation with minimal configuration. It includes support for a wide variety of screening and definitive assays as part of the base system, ensuring better screening of compounds’ ADME properties thereby lowering drug research costs. Out of the box functionality includes shareable templates for experimental assays, flexible and configurable data analysis methods, and flagging of acceptance results and statistics.

Leading the world in high-tech instruments, Thermo Electron Corporation helps life science, laboratory and industrial customers advance scientific knowledge, enable drug discovery, improve manufacturing processes, and protect people and the environment with instruments, scientific equipment, and sample-in/ knowledge-out solutions. Based in Waltham, Massachusetts, Thermo Electron has revenues of more than $2 billion, and employs approximately 11,000 people in 30 countries worldwide.

Before being acquired by Thermo, the LIMS solutions from LabSystems were owned by the Fisons Instruments division of Fisons PLC, and prior to that formed part of the VG Instruments Group. The company was originally founded as VG Laboratory Systems in 1982. Thermo acquired InnaPhase Corporation in 2004.
