Thermo LabSystems Releases New SM-PI Software
Thermo LabSystems, a world leader in laboratory informatics solutions
and services, has released SM-PI, a new software solution to interface its
enterprise SampleManager LIMS product with the PI System (PI) from OSIsoft.
The availability of SM-PI provides integration between the two solutions
to allow the timely delivery of quality data for monitoring purposes and
to ensure process integrity. OSIsoft provides real-time information management
software for plant-wide and enterprise-wide monitoring and analysis, vital
for the interactive control of production processes. SampleManager transmits
data taken from discrete measurements to PI. Once the sample has been logged
and analyzed for the pre-defined test in SampleManager, it can be sent to
the PI system in a secure manner using the SM-PI interface. Consequently,
a plant engineer or operator can analyze and track data trends, as well
as make decisions about data from the different locations throughout the
production process. These results are critical in optimizing processes and
highlighting problems before they occur. By sending information directly
from PI to SampleManager, the need to re-type recorded information is eliminated,
thereby eliminating the risk of errors that may be introduced by manual
transcription. The result is a better-controlled process, reduced product
loss and greater productivity. For details, visit http://www.osisoft.com

Biodata Ltd Computerizes University of Central
England's Laboratory
When the University of Central England wanted to fully computerise its electrodeposition
laboratory, it turned to Biodata for a system that improved the quality
of results, kept comprehensive records of all data and events, and increased
safety in the laboratory. The laboratory contains 11 tanks of solution,
and many parameters need to be measured and controlled in each of these
tanks. During electroplating or electroforming, a layer of metal is deposited
onto an object: positive metallic ions are attracted to a negatively charged
object. For optimum results strict regulation of current density is needed,
which is now provided by computer control. Voltage, temperature and level
are all measured and appropriate action taken if safe levels crossed. All
the motors, stirrers, agitators, probes, etc, are monitored and controlled
throughout the processes. If a vital piece of equipment in a tank fails,
that tank is completely shut down. The chemicals used in the deposition
process need replacing at regular intervals. The computerised system calculates
when and automatically applies the correct dose. Each tank has up to three
dosing pumps containing different solutions. As well as controlling the
laboratory, the system displays and logs data. Staff can see current data,
or historical progress charts. Information about the entire laboratory can
be seen or about individual tanks and equipment. Records are kept of all
processes, including information about any tasks performed manually, any
alarm conditions that occurred and the steps taken to remedy the situation.

NuGenesis Technologies and LabWare Announce
Enhanced Level of Product Integration
NuGenesis Technologies and LabWare, Inc. have announced that existing integration
between NuGenesis Scientific Data Management System (SDMS) and LabWare LIMS
is being significantly enhanced. The end result provides scientists with
new ways to better utilize instrument reports from within the LIMS. LIMS
implementation have typically involved automating the extraction of data
from many different types of analytical systems. A problem area has always
been the retention of the original instrument reports to enable display
from inside the LIMS and the added ability to incorporate these reports
into LIMS-generated documents. The seamless integration of NuGenesis SDMS
and LabWare LIMS offers users a scalable solution for automating the extraction
of analytical data fdrom any PC-based instrument report. When the data is
extracted through the interface, a traceable hyperlink is created and stored
with the sample in LabWare LIMS that points back to the original instrument
report stored in the NuGenesis SDMS software. For details, visit http://www.labware.com
