PerkinElmer LABWORKS Green Provides Biofuels Industry Turnkey Solution For Laboratory Information Management

PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences, a global leader in application-focused measurement and analysis solutions, has announced the introduction of a new LIMS designed specifically for the growing biofuels industry. LABWORKS Green is a specially tailored version of LABWORKS LIMS, targeted to specific functions needed by biodiesel production plants, that monitors the entire manufacturing process from raw material to finished product. As the use of biofuels becomes more prevalent, the necessity of ensuring the quality of the end product becomes more important. Biofuels analysis monitors key quality indicators in the manufacturing process, such as the presence of glycerin in biodiesel. LABWORKS Green allows biofuels labs to manage process and report work, capture analytical data and automatically generate Certificates of Analysis (COA) to meet global standards. "LABWORKS Green is another example of how PerkinElmer is addressing biofuels laboratory needs,” said Robert Hudson, director for enterprise software solutions at PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences. “The system is pre-loaded with tools specific to biofuels laboratory needs, enabling them to efficiently monitor and report critical data throughout the purification process.” The system is cost-effective, requires no maintenance and is expandable to adapt to quickly growing laboratory needs. To get started, labs fill out a simple questionnaire to specify the facility’s location codes for sampling points and then download the complete system onto their server. In addition, PerkinElmer’s global staff of experts can assist with training at either the customer’s own lab or at a PerkinElmer facility. The regulatory bodies that govern the use and certification of biofuels are increasingly demanding that COA be issued with each lot of material that enters the fuel distribution system. LABWORKS Green provides a complete and simple-to-use COA function that measures whether the product is in specification by comparing the sample results to the regulatory standard. Controls are set to prevent the production of a COA if any parameter fails a specification. "A high glycerin content can result in a build-up in fuel tanks, clogged fuel systems, injector deposits and filter plugging – which can all result in loss of revenue for the company and in performance problems for the end user,” added Hudson. He noted that LABWORKS Green can also be used to track other critical analyses performed on biodiesel including the concentration of light metals, sulfur and phosphorous as well as the values for flash point, kinematic viscosity and cetane number. “Every producer of biodiesel should be determining and reporting these values to assure that their product meets the appropriate quality standards.” For details, visit http://www.perkinelmer.com/biofuel.

OriginLab Releases Origin 8

OriginLab Corporation has released Origin 8, a comprehensive solution for scientists, engineers, researchers, and analysts who need to graph, analyze, and make professional presentations of their data. While Origin 8 will have many key features, the highlight is the product’s completely new workbook that forms the centerpiece of the Origin workspace. With the multi-sheet workbook, Origin users can now efficiently organize and manage data, metadata, analysis reports, graphs, and images using an intuitive and flexible interface. Multi-sheet workbooks now provide a handy way to keep related data, analysis results, and graphs together. Furthermore, users can create attractive reports using worksheet customization such as rich text cell formatting and cell borders. To provide full control over workbook content, sheets can be moved, added, inserted or deleted. As a special capability, Origin’s workbooks can contain graphs and images within cells – allowing for workbooks as an organizational container, or to aid image processing. Other new features for Origin 8 include the ability to place analysis results automatically into a worksheet within the raw data's workbook. In this way, parameter values, statistics and related analysis graphs are just a click away whenever looking at the original data. This new concept provides much better organization and more detailed reports compared to previous versions. As an added convenience, results of any previous analysis operation may be updated if the source data or analysis parameters are changed. To take advantage of both result consolidation and recalculation, users can set up an analysis operation as desired, with customized dialog settings then save the workbook or even an entire Origin project as a template. Later, future analysis of the same type of data may be quickly performed by simply replacing the original data. Just as Origin places graphs within result worksheet cells, users can place their own graphs in worksheet cells to create a custom report. An embedded graph may be modified for publication or presentation at any time simply by double-clicking on it to launch a graph window. After the graph has been customized, and the graph window is closed, updates are saved to the embedded graph contained in the worksheet cell. For details, visit http://www.originlab.com.

They know the LIMS will improve efficiencies and enable them to increase their turnover and cut costs, but finding time for the initial set-up can be difficult. Commissioning a LIMS involves a number of essentially straightforward but potentially time consuming steps, like populating the system’s database. While many customers might prefer to undertake these tasks themselves, competition for time with other day-to-day priorities in a busy lab may slow down the LIMS implementation. These new Rental Services are designed to eliminate this problem and bring the benefits of WinLIMS on line quickly and economically without disrupting the work of the laboratory.” WinLIMS Rental services include data upload, instrument interface configuration and assistance with customising reports.  Many users train themselves using the extensive teaching aids provided with WinLIMS Rental, but conventional training is also available from QSI if preferred. For those who are really pressed for time a full implementation package can be provided. For details, visit http://www.qsiuk.com.

Savi Technology Announces RFID Patent Licensing for Standards-Based Cargo Container E-seals

Savi Technology, a provider of RFID-based total asset management solutions, has announced a “QuickStart” licensing program for its intellectual property (IP) now incorporated into ISO 18185, the new standard for electronic cargo seals (e-Seals).  The Savi QuickStart e-Seal Licensing Program includes a reduced licensing fee for orders received by June 30, 2007.  Savi Technology, a Lockheed Martin Company, anticipates that licensing its IP for the tag-to-reader communication requirements in ISO 18185 will accelerate the worldwide use of e-Seals,  improve interoperability among RFID networks, and drive greater affordability of basic e-Seals. Approved in mid-April, the ISO 18185 standard addresses technical and application standards for e-Seals, which ISO describes as “non-reusable freight container seals” that “electronically evidence tampering or intrusion through the container doors.”   e-Seals are an emerging class of active RFID devices that incorporate both a mechanical locking mechanism and an active RFID module to provide wireless alerting and location capabilities not currently possible with traditional bolt seals, which are easily breached. Containerized cargo accounts for 90 percent of world trade, and some 200 million containers move through the world’s ports each year.  The SAFE Port Act of 2006 calls for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to define the voluntary use of container security devices in accordance with international standards, specifically referencing ISO, to potentially achieve faster clearance through U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
